Questions and answers on the materiality analysis

Overview Nachhaltigkeit

We have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions about materiality analysis here:

What is the materiality analysis according to CSRD and why is it relevant for my company? The materiality analysis is a central component of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). It serves to identify the most important sustainability aspects for a company that have an impact on the company itself as well as on the environment and society. The results of the materiality analysis form the basis for sustainability reporting in accordance with the CSRD. For you, this means that you know which topics you need to report on afterwards.
The double materiality analysis comprises two perspectives:

1. inside-out perspective: the inside-out perspective, also known as impact materiality, looks at the effects ("impacts") of the company on its environment and society. For example, greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption, working conditions and compliance with environmental and social standards are taken into account.

2. outside-in perspective: The outside-in perspective, also known as financial materiality, considers the financial impact of sustainability aspects on the company. For example, taxes on greenhouse gas emissions or costs for improving working conditions are taken into account. Both perspectives should take into account the views of relevant stakeholders, such as investors, customers, employees, suppliers and local communities. CSRD requires a double materiality analysis.
Since January 1, 2024, the CSRD applies to companies that are already subject to the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD)

From 01.01.2025, the CSRD will apply to companies that meet at least two of the following three criteria
  • More than 250 employees
  • More than 50 million euros in turnover
  • More than 25 million euros in total assets

From 01.01.2026, the CSRD will also apply to small and medium-sized listed companies (SMEs), small and non-complex credit institutions and captive insurance companies.

There are various approaches to conducting a materiality analysis.
The basic steps are:
1. recording and selecting the material aspects from an inside-out and outside-in perspective
2. evaluation of risks and opportunities along the list of aspects
3. resolution of contradictions and deviations
4. documentation

Some companies require 12 months or longer. If you follow the Better Earth 4-step process, you can expect your audit-ready results after 12-16 weeks. Of course, the exact duration also depends on the data situation and availability of contact persons.

There are various tools and software solutions that can facilitate the documentation of a materiality analysis in particular. However, all currently available software solutions do not eliminate the need for internal and/or external specialist expertise. At Better Earth, we use tried and tested tools to make our work more productive.

The materiality analysis should be completed and reviewed by the end of 2024. This will create the basis for you to fulfill the reporting obligations from 1.1.2025 on this basis. As you can expect it to take 3-4 months to complete, the materiality analysis should be started in Q3-2024 at the latest.

The audit is carried out by the auditors you appoint. If we accompany you, we coordinate the procedure with the auditor of your choice at an early stage and validate interim results.

By integrating the results of the materiality analysis into your sustainability strategy, you can ensure that your strategy both complies with the legal requirements of the CSRD and contributes effectively to the sustainable development of your company. After identifying the material topics resulting from the materiality analysis the next steps are gap analysis and target setting. Performing the gap analysis and defining sustainability targets, metrics/KPIs, policies and measures are particularly important to systematically integrate the results of the materiality analysis into the sustainability strategy of your company and to make them effective for action.

Founder's Note

Profound transformation is needed to co-create a sustainable economy. Initially, CSRD reporting seems like a burden and meeting the requirements can be challenging.

At Better Earth, we aim to help companies seize the strategic opportunities of transformation. We firmly believe that the CSRD reporting obligation can be implemented in a lean way and at the same time gain strategic momentum and unleash business potential.

The orientation towards sustainable business transformation should start early. CSRD reporting should be used as a strategic impetus for a new era of "impact first" entrepreneurship. To achieve this, we have developed a pragmatic materiality process that helps companies to effectively fulfill the CSRD obligation.

Our promise is 100% professional excellence. Our claim is 100% legal compliance. Our passion is 100% Impact First.
